The words ‘therapy’ (or ‘psychotherapy’) and ‘counselling’ are often used to mean the same thing. They help individuals navigate transitions, face challenges and cope with major crises. Therapy can be helpful when you have a specific issue or decision you want to explore. It can also help you gain more insight into patterns you have noticed in your lives and want to work on longer-term. Through therapy, you can identify your goals, your emotions, and your strengths, as well as develop practical tools for managing your mental health.
I offer therapy to women (18+) living anywhere in Ontario. I use the term 'women' to include all self-identified women (including two-spirited, cisgender or transgender women) and also welcome those who identify as non-binary or gender fluid.
You may have found that talking with friends and family about your problems can be helpful. However, there is a limit to how much support they can offer you. Talking to a trained mental health professional enables you to get a more objective perspective. There are also research-informed methods that a mental health professional can use to help you explore and process whatever challenges you are currently facing.
Some people think that talking to someone about their problems shows ‘weakness’. Seeking therapy is actually the opposite! It shows a commitment to understanding yourself more and taking charge of how you want to live your life.
First, we will have a free 20-minute consultation. We’ll discuss what you are looking for in therapy and this also gives us the chance to decide whether we think we would work well together. After the consultation, we will schedule regular, 50-minute sessions. In the first session, we will talk in more detail about what brings you to therapy and what you hope to gain. The approach I use with you will be individually tailored for your situation. Over our sessions, we will work towards developing an authentic, trusting relationship, built on compassion and acceptance. We will work collaboratively to develop your skills, identify your strengths, and create positive changes in your life. My goal is to help you learn to trust yourself and feel confident to tackle the obstacles in your life.
In today's fast-paced world, mental health support should be convenient and accessible. I live in Toronto, but my secure online platform allows me to offer counselling services across Ontario. Research has shown that online therapy can be just as effective as in-person therapy for a variety of mental health issues. People sometimes wonder if developing a relationship with a therapist online is difficult. I totally get that! But, in my experience, authentic and trusting relationships can still be created easily with virtual counselling. You can access my calendar 24/7 and easily choose appointments that fit into your schedule. You will be sent a link 30 minutes before our session to join. All you need is an internet connection and a private space. Click here to schedule a 20-min free consultation to discuss what you’re looking for in therapy and see if we think we are a good fit.
People often wonder how long therapy takes. The short answer is that it varies from person to person. The length of time needed depends on your specific goals and issues. Some people may find relief and accomplish their goals in a few sessions. Others find longer-term therapy helpful for ongoing personal growth and understanding. After attending therapy for a while, many clients will do “check-in” sessions to help them continue to use the tools they’ve previously learned. Regularly attending sessions and active engagement in the process will make progress more effective and efficient. I encourage feedback and will work with you to evaluate progress and make any necessary adjustments to your treatment plan. As with many aspects of therapy, there is no one-size-fits-all approach. What matters most is the positive impact it has on your life.
Talk Works is a private practice and therefore not covered by OHIP. Therapy is often covered if you have an employer-provided or private health insurance plan. Check your plan carefully to see what types of mental health professionals they cover. When working with me, your plan will need to cover Registered Psychotherapists. After every session, you will receive a receipt with my name and credentials. I understand that taking care of your mental health sometimes has financial constraints and can work flexibly with you within those constraints. Because I believe that everyone deserves access to mental health care, I have a limited number of sliding scale spots for those facing extreme hardship. Contact me for more details.
